The society (originally called Victorian Appaloosa and Spotted pony Society) was founded in Shepparton in 1971 by the distinguished Australian horseman Mr Chris. E. Howe A.O. It was the first register for Appaloosa's and Spotted Ponies in Australia. Through the seventies Appaloosa's, British Spotted Ponies and Ponies of the America's were registered with the society. Today, many Appaloosa's and Australian Spotted ponies trace their origin back to Chris Howe's imports.
The Appaloosa and Australian Spotted Pony Society (Inc.) registers Appaloosa's and Australian Spotted ponies in two separate registries. It’s the only association in the world to provide its members with such a choice, and for that reason is basically a true family society.
While it has been rumored The Appaloosa and Australian Spotted Pony Society (Inc.) does not accept crossing between the two breeds.
The Appaloosa's are bred on Accepted international and Australian lines, and make top halter and performance horses for both youth and adults, while the Australian Spotted ponies are based on the Australian Pony Stud Book standard, with the added interest of spotted, LP Roans and Blanketed coat patterns.
Ponies must be under 14 hh - great mounts for smaller adults and youth. Scaled down to lead line size they are fun for small children and grandparents alike, and there is a place for the tinniest of all - Miniature Australian Spotted Ponies.
Attention to conformation and temperament has produced ponies and horses for adult and child riders, capable of performing in any aspect of equine activity. An increasing number of members use their versatility for English, Western and Australian type events, and harness.
Membership of the society is a privilege not a right, and members are expected to uphold the societies image and to promote its aims.
